What Are Google Local Services Ads?
Pay-per-lead ads at the very top of Google.
Local Services Ads (often called LSAs) are Google ads built for local service businesses. They show at the top of Google Search and on Google Maps when someone nearby searches for what you do, like "plumber near me" or "house cleaning in Salisbury."
Three things make them different from regular Google Ads:
- You pay per lead, not per click. You're charged when a customer calls, messages, or books you through the ad. Someone who looks and leaves costs you nothing.
- There are no keywords to manage. Google matches your ad to searches based on your job types and service area.
- You have to be verified first. Google checks your business, and approved businesses get a green Google Verified badge next to their name.

Let's get you set up →Don't See Your Business on the List?
You still have good options.
Here's what to do:
- Look for a close match. Google's names are broad. A gutter cleaner may fit under Window cleaning or Roofing, and a deck builder under Carpentry or General contracting. Pick the category that matches most of your jobs.
- Check again in a few months. Google adds new categories every so often, usually by testing them in a few markets first.
- Build your free visibility first. Your Google Business Profile, reviews, and website bring in calls whether or not you can run Local Services Ads. That's where I start every business in The Local Visibility Playbook.
- Use regular Google Ads or Facebook ads. These work for almost any business type. You pay per click instead of per lead, so they take more care to run well.
How to Check If Local Services Ads Are Available in Your Area
A category can be open in one state and closed in the next.
This 2-minute check tells you for sure.
- Go to Google's Local Services Ads sign-up page and sign in with your Google account.
- Choose United States as your country.
- Pick your state and type your ZIP code.
- Open the Job category menu and choose your business type.
- Click Check Eligibility.
If your area is open, Google lets you continue to sign-up. If not, try a nearby ZIP code in your service area, or pick the next-closest category.
What It Takes to Get Approved (and the Google Verified Badge)
Being eligible gets you in the door. Verification gets you live.
Here's what Google typically checks:
- Business registration or license. What's required depends on your trade and your state. Licensed trades like plumbing, electrical, and HVAC need an active license.
- Insurance. Some categories need proof of liability insurance. This also varies by state.
- Background checks. Google runs checks on the business and the owner. In some categories, the people who do the work are checked too.
- Reviews. Many categories need a minimum number of Google reviews and a solid star rating before your ad can show.
- A Google Business Profile. Your ad pulls your name, address, and hours from your profile, so it needs to be accurate and verified.
Google Guaranteed Is Now Google Verified
If you're searching for "Google Guaranteed," here's what changed. On October 20, 2025, Google retired the Google Guaranteed, Google Screened, and License Verified by Google badges. Every approved business now gets one badge: Google Verified.
The money-back guarantee that came with Google Guaranteed ended at the same time. If you were already verified, your badge switched over on its own. If your website, truck, or ads still say "Google Guaranteed," it's time to update them.
Licenses, insurance, background checks, review minimums: I'll walk you through every step and get your Google Verified badge live as fast as possible.

You only pay when a real customer contacts you.
Google doesn't publish lead prices, but 2026 industry studies put the average home services lead at about $53 to $63. Most trades land somewhere between $25 and $130 per lead.
What changes your cost per lead:
- Your trade. Emergency and high-dollar jobs (HVAC, roofing, water damage) cost more per lead than lower-ticket services.
- Your location. Big-city leads usually cost more than small-town and rural leads.
- The season. Lead prices rise when demand spikes, like AC repair in July.
- The type of lead. Google charges message leads at half the price of a phone lead.
- Your profile. Google says stronger profiles may pay less per lead.
You set a budget, and Google won't go over your monthly cap. If you get a lead that's clearly not a real job, like a wrong number or spam, you can flag it and ask for a credit.
I manage your budget, dispute junk leads for credits, and adjust your spend around your busy season, so every dollar works harder.
See how I manage LSAs →What's Changing With Local Services Ads in 2026
LSAs are moving into the main Google Ads platform.
Your ads become a special Performance Max campaign built for pay-per-lead. Here's the short version.
What stays the same
- You still pay per lead, not per click
- Your ads still show in the same spots on Google Search and Google Maps
- There are still no keywords to manage
- Your Google Verified badge carries over
What changes
- You manage everything inside Google Ads instead of the old LSA dashboard
- Weekly budgets become daily budgets; your monthly cap stays the same
- Manual max-per-lead bidding goes away
- Your name, address, and hours sync from your Google Business Profile, so keep that profile accurate
- Your old performance reports don't carry over: download or screenshot them before you switch
When it happens
- August 2026: Select US home and storefront businesses, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing, pest control, and moving.
- Late 2026: More businesses, including service-area businesses without a storefront.
- 2027: Everyone else, plus accounts outside the US.
Google emails your account admin 14 days before your account moves. New advertisers still sign up through the regular Local Services sign-up page for now.
The move to Google Ads changes your budget, bidding, and dashboard. I'll save your reports, check your new settings, and keep your leads flowing through the switch.
Get help with the migration →Are Local Services Ads Right for Your Business?
They work best once your foundation is in place.
If your category is on the list, LSAs are one of the best ways to get hot leads. In The Local Visibility Playbook, paid leads are step 7, not step 1.
LSAs are a good fit if
- Your Google Business Profile is set up correctly and verified
- You have steady 5-star reviews coming in
- You (or someone on your team) can answer the phone or call back within minutes
- You have room on your schedule for more jobs
Hold off if
- You have only a handful of reviews: your ad will sit below competitors with more
- Calls often go to voicemail: you still pay for leads you miss, and slow replies can hurt your ranking
- You're already booked solid: pause until you have room, or set a small budget
Local Services Ads FAQ
What businesses qualify for Google Local Services Ads?
In the US, 116 business types qualify as of October 2026. They include home services like plumbing, HVAC, and roofing; auto services; health care; beauty; pet care; and professional services like law and real estate. See the full list above, then check your ZIP code.
Is Google Guaranteed still available?
No. Google replaced the Google Guaranteed badge with the Google Verified badge on October 20, 2025. The money-back guarantee ended at the same time. The ads themselves work the same way.
How much do Local Services Ads cost per lead?
It depends on your trade, location, and season. 2026 industry studies put the average home services lead at about $53 to $63, with most trades between $25 and $130. Message leads cost half as much as phone leads.
Do I pay if someone just clicks my ad?
No. You only pay when someone calls, messages, or books you through the ad. If a lead is spam or a wrong number, you can ask Google for a credit.
Do I need a website to run Local Services Ads?
No. Your ad is built from your Local Services profile and your Google Business Profile. A strong website still helps you win the job once a customer starts comparing businesses.
Do I need a Google Business Profile?
Yes, you should have one. Your ad pulls your business name, address, and hours from it. It's also where your Google reviews live, and reviews affect how often your ad shows.
Why is my category listed but not available in my area?
Google opens categories state by state and city by city. Run the eligibility check with your ZIP code. If it's closed, check again in a few months or try another ZIP code in your service area.
Can I choose which jobs I get leads for?
Yes. You pick your job types and the areas you serve. Turn off the jobs you don't want so you don't pay for those leads.
How long does it take to get verified?
It varies. Background checks and license reviews are usually the slowest parts. Have your license, insurance, and business registration ready before you start.
What's the difference between Local Services Ads and regular Google Ads?
Local Services Ads charge per lead, need no keywords, and show the Google Verified badge. Regular Google Ads charge per click and need more setup and management. They're open to almost any business.
